Reading your competitors' ads without being fooled

Copying a running creative copies a result without its cause. Here's what to look at in a competitor's ad, and in what order.

Order matters

Look first at how long the ad has been running, then at how many variants exist, and only at the end at the visual itself. The reverse — falling for a creative and then looking for reasons — is the most common way to lose a budget.

What the copy gives you for free

An ad's body often contains the price, the payment method, the delivery area and the main objection the seller is trying to remove. That is four pieces of commercial information, free, and reading them costs nothing.

If three competitors handle the same objection in their first three lines, that objection is losing sales. It's a gift.

Don't copy the identity, copy the structure

Taking the hook, the rhythm and the angle from an ad that has held for two months is observation. Taking its images or its brand name is something else, and it turns on you quickly.

It's also why SpySouk never shows who runs an ad: the product, the creative and the signals are enough to learn from, and the seller's identity isn't yours.
